Monday Musings 12/04
3 Positive things that i've enjoyed this week.. Everything, and anything from nutrition related information to interesting podcasts, books, a quote that resonated with me or just my thoughts from the week.
1.) Just Eat It - By Laura Thomas PhD
http://www.laurathomasphd.co.uk/just-eat-it/
An incredible book I have re-read this week!!!! A book I believe is for EVERYONE. The tag line to the book is, 'How intuitive eating can help you get your shit together around food.' But after reading this for the second time I genuinely believe that this book is for everyone, as there are so many incredible 'myth-busting' sections, which dismantle so many pseudo-science phrases and nutrition myths I hear being shared aaaaaall the time, not just by people struggling with disorder eating but the general population too. I have actually bought a couple of copies now to lend to friends, it is such an amazing, easily accessible resource which explains diet-culture, dismantles it, and builds you up with the tools to be self-compassionate and have freedom from food ( & rules, or beliefs) and our bodies.
I highly recommend reading it and following Laura Thomas the amazing nutritionist who wrote it. One of may favourite chapters is 'Neutralising your inner food critic', which I feel majority of people will have to lessening degrees. Plus, follow her clinic's Instagram page for more amazing intuitive eating content and guidance.
2.) The power in our name....
Recently I have started some volunteer work on a ward in a hospital. Mainly to chat and keep patients company. Before starting I had been feeling nervous as I haven’t been in many hospitals before or spoken to people who may be suffering in that way.
During my first shift a very kind nurse gave me some advice, 'ask the patient their name and share your name with them too before anything else', it sounds straight forward and maybe obvious, but when I was nervous it wasn't the first thing i thought to do. Also, it made me realise it's not something I do naturally in other settings when meeting new people. Immediately, I noticed things shifting when I spoke to the patients, and asked them their name first. They were no longer just a bed number, as I had only known them when walking into the bays, and how all too often people can feel within the healthcare system.
I've always known our name holds a lot of importance, and that it's a direct way to connect with someone, making them feel heard by remembering and using their name. But, I had often told myself 'I'm not good with names'. That is just not true, you can make the effort to remember and when you do you can connect on such a human level so quickly with a complete stranger. There is so much power in that.
3.) “Nobody changes in a field of judgement, people change in a field of unconditional love and compassion.”- Julie Piatt
This beautiful quote really resonated with me this week. It was spoken by Julie Piatt, on The Rich Roll podcast episode called, 'Know Thyself'. She is Rich's wife and 'Sprit Guide' as he calls her. This whole conversation was straight from the heart and they spoke about so many beautiful topics of the human experience. I have been taking more time recently to really drill down to my key values and understand them more and try to make actions each day which really align with those values. A key one for me is Compassion, and treating every person or situation with unconditional compassion. This quote really grounded me within those thoughts.
